The Maude Abbott Medical Museum: Teaching for yesterday and today

Presented by Dr. Richard Fraser, Director

The Maude Abbott Medical Museum originated around the time of the founding of the Montreal Medical Institute (1823/24) (the forerunner of the McGill University Medical Faculty and of McGill itself). Many specimens in its collections were gathered in the late 1800s and early 1900s and illustrate diseases such as syphilis, rickets and congenital cardiac anomalies that are encountered uncommonly today in an untreated state in “developed” countries. The history of the Museum and the uses of its specimens to teach about historical and current medical issues will be discussed.
